Training in Item Development for Language Specialists

Cito consultants provided a consultancy and training activity for the Hellenic American Union (HAU). The key subjects of this activity were:

• Introduction to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: learning, teaching, assessment and its proficiency scales;
• Issues in linking examinations to the CEF scales;
• Analysis of levels of the HAU test and relation to the CEF levels;
• Training in test and item construction and psychometric analysis of items and tests.

At the end of the Cito Item Development training for language specialists, the participant

• was familiar with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEF);
• was familiar with procedures to link examinations to CEF;
• was familiar with quality requirements of tests;
• was able to regulate item and test difficulty;
• was familiar with issues relating to multiple choice and open-ended items;
• was able to develop multiple choice and open-ended items according to relevant quality requirements;
• was able to develop marking schemes for the items developed.
